MILESTONES

MILESTONES

These languages are among the most spoken in the world, and the translation process is a community-driven process that draws on the expertise of our global network.

As part of its stewardship responsibilities, CC closely tracked several disputes involving CC Licenses...

... intervening in one of those with a request to file an amicus brief to provide guidance on the proper interpretation of the licenses.

In each known instance, CC licenses were again enforced and interpreted properly, attesting to their robustness and clarity.

TRANSLATIONS

Creative Commons official translations

Beginning with version 4.0, CC is supporting official linguistic translations

of its six (6) core licenses.

Creative Commons official translations

CC's policy is to support

a single official translation into any particular language,

absent a compelling reason otherwise.

Creative Commons official translations

All official translations of legal code

are conducted according to the

Legal Code Translation Policy.

All legal code translation projects must be approved in advance

by Creative Commons.

Translations involve linguistic translation only, they do not adapt to local law.

PORTED

TRANSLATIONS

Creative Commons ported translations

For versions 3.0 and before

of the licenses, Creative Commons supported ported translations.

These were linquistic translations, adapted to local law.

The translation process was similar and ported translations referred

to jurisdictions.

Staging the files

  • The "staging server" is a space on the CC server where translations can be viewed as if they were live on the website.
  • A script automatically uploads, on the hour, on the staging server the files modified on Git.

Creating the HTML files

Final checklist before sign-offs

  • Teams do the conversion...

Translating BY-NC-SA and then the other 5 files

  • Check all links in legal code
  • Make sure Wiki page for translation is updated
  • Check that license title is fully translated
  • Confirm that HTML is validated
  • To avoid mistakes, teams are encouraged to use the comparison tables.
  • ... or the TA does it, based on the comparison table and the original English license.
  • It makes it easier for HQ and the Translation Assistant to make further corrections or to track changes in hyperlinks, style or other HTML-related changes.
