History

Spinning Jenny by James Hargreaves (Presented by Micah Lewis).

Beginning

The Start of The Textile Industry

In the beggining of the textile industry the workers (mostly female) worked in there own homes weaving cloth.

The Spinning Jenny

The Spinning Jenny

In 1764 James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny (named after his daughter) to make it so more people worked in factories and the process of creatinng clothes would greatly shorten and be mass produced.

How It Works

How It Works

The Spining Jenny had 8 spindles that the thread was spun on so all you had to do was turn a wheel to spin 8 threads at once. Later, improvments were made to the point where you could spin 80 at a time. The material produced could only be used for weft.

The Inventor

James Hargreaves

James Hargreaves was an english inventor who started out as an poor spinner and weaver with no formal education. After a while he constructed a device that could spin multiple threads at the same time and began selling them.

Fun Fact

Even though James Hargreaves got pretty wealthy he worked at the mill until his dying days.

Inspiration

The Inspiration

Its common knowledge for anyone that researched James Hargreaves that his inspiration for the Spinning Jenny was something his daughter did.

BUT, everyone says she did something different. Some say she knocked over a spinner and some say that she overturned a wheel in a spinner

Benefits

The Spinning Jenny only made the rich richer honestly. It didn't do much for the weavers working at home but send them to a factory. It made a huge difference for the country of England in the industrial revolution but not for the individuals.

Obsolete

Replaced

The Spinning Jenny was replaced or superseded by the Spinning Mule. The Spinning Mule spun textile fibers into yarn and could spin more than the spinning Jenny
