Queen Meadhbh and the Brown Bull of Cooley

Táin Bó Cualinge

Welcome to our workshop!

Welcome

Our workshop is about Geology

Geology is the study of rocks and the landscape around us

Today's workshop

Geology

More about Geology

The study of the Earth, the rocks that make the Earth and how they change over TIME

Geologists don't think about time the way that we do.

The Earth has been around for a LONG time, so Geologists must think about time on a scale that covers this whole time period, 4.6 billion years!

When a geologist calls something young, it may still be many tens of millions of years old!

For this workshop you will need:

  • Open eyes and ears
  • To become a scientist
  • To become a detective
  • To become a storyteller

Do you know the story of

Queen Meadhbh and the Brown

Bull of Cooley?

The

Myth

Let's Learn Together!

Once upon a time...

Queen Meadhbh lived in a castle in what is now Rathcroghan, County Roscommon

Both Queen Meadhbh and her husband were fabulously wealthy, but they argued about which of them had the most money

They were equal in everything, except that Ailill owned Finnbennach, the fearsome white bull

The Brown Bull of Cooley - Donn Cuailnge

Donn Cuailnge was the Brown Bull of Cooley. He could rival Finnbennach, the white bull!

Donn Cuailnge lived in County Louth and Queen Meadhbh had to have him to rival her husband!

Borrowing the bull?

Nope! Daire Mac Fiachna would not lend Queen Meadhbh the bull.

She started a war to steal Donn Cuailnge back to Rathcroghan!

The fight

To those that watched it, it was like mountains moving!

Donn Cuailnge wanted to go home

He investigated some amazing geological places on the way!

The Cave of Cats!

Leinster house, one of Ireland's most famous buildings, is made of limestone from fossils!

Folded and crumpled up rocks?

Iapetus Suture

Ireland used to be part of two separate islands, or landmasses

Why do the rocks look like this?

How did they come together?

Islands and land can't move, can they?

Yes they can!!

The Earth has layers

The Earth is like a cake!

We live on the earth's crust

Let's learn how!

The Earth's crust is made up of different plates, like a giant jigsaw! Plates float on the mantle and can move.

Moving plates can cause:

A floating jigsaw!

  • Earthquakes
  • New land to form
  • Volcanoes!

In Ireland, two plates crumpled together!

What happened in Ireland?

This brought the landmasses of Laurentia in the North and Avalonia in the South together.

Where they crashed, the rocks got pushed up and crumpled together. Some rocks melted, others got folded and broke up!

A really weird thing...

Donn Cuailnge is finally home!

Thank you for joining the Brown Bull on his geological journey home!

We hope you enjoyed our workshop, and have learned lots of interesting and exciting information about Irish myths and legends and, or course, geology!
