Regarding my selection

My selection was Shrek because it is one of my favorite movies and I love how each character is represented.

Type of Media

IT´S FILM

The movie I'm going to talk about today is Shrek 1, but this character has four movies:

2004

2007

2010

2001

The plot

What is it about?

An ogre named Shrek lived alone in a swamp. One day his loneliness is interrupted by the invasion of a group of characters from fairy tales, all of them banished from their own tales by Lord Farquaad, King of Duloc.

Shrek decides to save his home by reaching an agreement with Farquaad, which consists of rescuing Princess Fiona from the castle guarded by a fire-breathing dragon.

The context

THE CONTEXT

The film is released in 2001 in a context where until then princesses used to have certain characteristics and ways of acting, while princes had to fulfill certain specific roles.

Shrek comes to break all those schemes, making a switch, showing us a princess outside the stereotype and a very unexpected "prince savior".

MALE PERSPECTIVE

how are the males portrayed?

WHAT ARE THEIR ATTITUDES, BELIEFS, BEHAVIOURS AND THOUGHTS?

In the kingdom, where the story takes place, the man is portrayed as the typical heroic and handsome knight who must go in search of a princess.

Charming prince

But Shrek, the main character, breaks this stereotype by being the complete opposite of what a prince is. He's a green, bald ogre who stinks, burps, and doesn't look very good.

Shrek

WHAT MALE STEREOTYPES ARE BEING PORTRAYED?

Initially, it highlights the stereotype that the knight must save the princess, but with Shrek they show that the man must not always be strong, perfect, brave and romantic.

See first seconds, I could not find the video in English :(

FEMALE PERSPECTIVE

how are the females portrayed?

WHAT ARE THEIR ATTITUDES, BELIEFS, BEHAVIOURS AND THOUGHTS?

The woman is portrayed, at first, as the princess who needs to be rescued, a woman who without her prince is practically not self-sufficient.

Also in the other princesses of the film you can see the stereotype that they must have very delicate behaviors. Fiona breaks that stereotype, sometimes saving Shrek with her knowledge of martial arts, belching and especially with her physical appearance, which was different from what princesses should have. Her features were thicker and she was a curvy girl, which had never been seen in a princess before.

In addition, a trans princess is incorporated, which also breaks the stereotype of the "typical princess"

WHAT FEMALE STEREOTYPES ARE BEING PORTRAYED?

It mainly breaks the stereotype of "weakness", behavior and physical appearance of women.

WHAT IS THE GENDER MESSAGE BEING PRESENTED?

You don't have to be perfect to be happy

It is not necessary to have an impeccable attitude or a perfect body to be satisfied with our life and, above all, with ourselves, showing that the beauty of life is in living it and enjoying every moment to the fullest.

There is nothing (or nobody) impossible

Obviously, it is not usual to end up at a wedding by marrying a princess who lived in a castle and who you saved yourself. But the reality is that many times we underestimate ourselves when trying to achieve something or fight for someone, dismissing the idea even before trying. This movie is the best example that even the most unexpected character can achieve whatever he sets his mind to.

Being different is not bad

During the development of the first film, Fiona makes the decision to forever become an ogre. With this they taught us that you can also be happy being different from others, and that you can even choose and want to be different.
