If a person knows that they are either AB or O then they know their genotype. For a person who is A or B, they can't be sure of their genotype because there are two possible genotypes for A and B.
We asked my Dad about what his blood type is. He said that he has type O blood, so we know that his genotype is oo.
My Mom knew that she is type A but we didn't know whether she is AA or Ao.
So we are going to use a blood type testing kit to test me and my sister's blood type and see if we can determine my Mom's genotype.
In doing the blood type test we found out that I am type A blood. We can know my genotype, Ao, as well as my phenotype because my dad is O and my mom is A. unfortunately this doesn't help us know if my mom is AA or Ao
Next we tested Allie's blood type. Her test showed that she is type O. This must mean she got an o allele from our mom so my mom's genotype is Ao
Rebecca wouldn't let us stick her finger with the nedle to do the blood type test. So we don't know Rebecca's blood type, but we do know the chance of her being type A or type O.
Rebecca has a 50% chance of being A
and a 50% chance of being O
If Allie's blood had been type A. We still wouldn't have known my mom's genotype. Her genotype could only be determined
if one or more children are type O. If Allie had been A we would have had to test Rebecca's blood to see if she was O
This is a Punnet Square that shows the possible genotypes for my parents offsping. Mom's genotype is on the top and Dad's genotype is on the left side.
