The Changing Filmic Experience

Characteristics of the Film Experience

1) Apparatus - the device and environment in which we are consuming and experiencing a film through

Sensory Aspect

2) Image/Sounds - creation of a "possible world", invention with replicas of reality within the narrative

3) Presence of an observer

The film experience is harder to define in today's changing world. Viewing of a film in general has changed from primarily in a large theatre to vewiing at home through streaming platforms and the internet. By watching a film in a theatre vs. at home, you are able to isolate yourself easier as the "apparatus" in which you are viewing a film through is more immersive (ie. loud speakers, larger screens, dark rooms). You are taken out of your normal surroundings in which you can leave reality outside and be a part of a new world through film, while viewing at home it becomes harder to separate yourself from reality as you are surrounded by your everyday life.

4) Collective experience based on a social encounter - shared knowledge of how a person reacts to a situation

An aspect of the filmic experience includes a sensory one, where a viewership feels immersed in a new world. The audience should be introduced and immersed enough to feel as if they are experiencing new settings, worlds, and people themselves. Most films who acheive this aspect portray an interpretation of the real-world to be able to visualize themselves within the fictional world before them.

5) Payment - whether the person has a "stake in the game", did they pay to attend and be included in this experience

Viewing in modern ways such as through streaming platforms at home makes it harder for a film to achieve these aspects of the experience.

"A particular modality is used in which the cinematographic instiution allows the spectator to perceive and re-elaborate the perception into knowledge and competence"

Types of Shots

Collective Aspect

This aspect of the filmic experience allows for a group immersion or involvement within cinema. Films of this nature should include themes of general interest in which it draws in a large audience of people as a spectacular experience with this film requires the involvement of others.
