Sewing Machines

BEFORE

BEFORE

Before sewing machines were invented, all clothing was hand sewn, most likely by a female family member. To make garments, people would use needle and thread.

THE INVENTION

THE INVENTION

The first design for a sewing machine is believed to have been invented in 1790, by Thomas Saint. His machine was meant leather and canvas. In 1830, Barthelemy Thimonnier patented the mechanical sewing machine for the first time.

AFTER

AFTER

Once sewing machines were used in factories, it allowed more materials (mainly clothes) to be available for the public. Women of homes wouldn't be responsible for sewing all garments for an entire household. Women could also start working in factories. Factories that had sewing machines were products of capitalization. Factories modernized how humans get their garments, which is still common today.
