Summary: Chapter 36

Chapters 36-37

Characters

  • Huck Finn- Throughout this chapter Huck still follows Tom even though his methods are unreal, because he sees him as his idol.
  • Tom Sawyer- Comes up and thinks of fantasy methods for Jim's escape.
  • Jim- Remains in the shack while Tom and Huck plan for his escape
  • Nat- The Phelps' slave who brings food to Jim and helps out with his escape.

Characters

  • Tom and Huck sneak out at night to begin digging the escsape hole.
  • They use pick-axes after giving up from using the pocket knives.
  • They tell Jim they will use Nat to hide tools and things for his escape
  • Tom would have wanted to make his escape an 80 year record.
  • 11 dogs sneak in Jim's shack and Nat passes out when he thinks they are witches.
  • Tom tells Nat to let him make a witch pie
  • to avoid bad luck by the witches

Chapter 37

  • Huck and Tom Leave Jim's shed and are almost caught stealinng tools and things needed for Jim's escape.
  • Huck and Tom trick Aunt Sally by messing with the spooms which make her lose the spoon count.
  • Huck and Tom block all the rat holes for Uncle Silas because he was blamed for the lost spoon by Aunt Sally.
  • Huck and Tom bake the witch's pie and hide the rope in it for Jim so he can escape.

Chapter 37

Characters

Huckleberry Finn- Continues to follow Tom because he

idolizes him and is also almost caught by the discovery of

missing items

Tom Sawyer- Continues planning for Jim's rescue and is almost

caught for the items he stole

Jim- Still held captive and expects to receive tools sent by Huck

and Tom

Uncle Silas- Can't find the shirt Huck and Tom stole and

is blamed for the missing items.

Aunt Sally- Puzzled by the disappearance of Silas' shirt and the

bed sheet, she also interrogates the family for clues

Nat- After being scared into thinking he was being haunted by

witches, he will give a witch pie to Jim with a rope for his escape

SUMMARY

  • Tom tells Jim to add inscriptions into the wall of the shed before he escapes
  • The boys try stealing a millstone but it is too heavy for them
  • Lastly, Tom tries to get Jim to take a snake, rat, or spider into the shed

  • Tom and Huck capture snakes and rats to put in the shed with Jim captive and accidently infest the whole house with them.
  • Uncle Silas intends to advertise Jim as a captured runaway slave.
  • Tom wants to prevent that from happening so he writes a letter threatening the family.
  • The letter he writes to the family says that theives will attempt to seize Jim.

Chapter 40

  • Aunt and Uncle Silas are curious about the letter.
  • Several armed farmers become uneasy and attack the shed leaving Tom, Huck, and Jim to escape.
  • They reach the canoe and head straight for the raft and find out that Tom got shot in the leg.
  • They worry if they should take Tom to a doctor.
  • Huck believes that Jim is "White" inside.

Summary:

Chapters 41-42

  • Huck finds a doctor to help Tom
  • As Huck is returning home he finds a group of women with Aunt Sally
  • Jim, the doctor, and Tom return home
  • Everyone wants to hang Jim for his punishment, but the doctor speaks up for him
  • Waiting for Tom to wake up
  • Tom tells everyone that Jim is free
  • Mrs. Watsom died about two months ago and set Jim free in her will
  • Aunt Polly shows up and reveals everyone's fake identities

Chapter 43

  • Jim was finally released from being imprisoned and his help with the doctor impressed Aunt Polly, Aunt Sally, and Uncle Silas so they gave him food and cleaned him up
  • Jim also got $40 for being a patient prisoner
  • Tom talks about taking Jim and Huck on adventures but Huck claims that he doesn’t have the money for it because he assumed his father took his money from Judge Thatcher and used it to get drunk
  • Jim tells Huck that he doesn’t have to worry about his father because the dead body they found back in chapter 9 was Pap.

It is revealed that Jim had been freed throughout a large portion of the novel, this strenous and almost pointless journey Huck and Jim went on can be connected to Dante's Inferno.
