The real colonization of the island

Colonization

The real colonization of the island began with the Dutch who named it "Mauritius" in honor of Prince Maurice Van Nassau of Holland. Instead of expanding their colony, the Dutch were content to loot wildlife (hence the extinction of the dodo).

Mauritian Creole

Mauritian Creole

The population grows in the Ile de France and the appearance of the Mauritian Creole is according to historians between 1721 and 1769, which would explain that the Mauritian Creole today still contains words of Senegalese origin descending from the Wolof language. This Creole also includes large quantities of Malagasy and Comorian words because a large number of slaves were also deported from Madagascar and the Comoros.
