Definitions

Canon

A movement/movement phrase/motif/

shape performed by one dancer(s) or group

beginning at different times.

  • There are various types of Canon.

Repetition and Retrograde

  • Repetition

A choreographic device in which the

movements/phrase/motif is repeated.

  • Retrograde

A choreographic device whereby

movements/phrase/motif are

performed backwards (reverse order).

Accumulation

A choreographic device where

new movements are added to

existing movements in a

successive manner.

E.g. - A, AB, ABC, ABCD.

Motif

A small movement phrase or

gestures that can be elaborated or

developed in a variety of ways in the

process of the choreography.

Other Devices

Climax - The most intense or highest point in the development or resolution of choreography.

Unison - Two or more people performing the same movement at the same time.

Embellishment - A choreographic device where detail is added to the original movement sequence.

Contrast - A choreographic device where dance elements are altered to create oppositions.

E.g. as high/low, big/little.
