Manifest Destiny

Deborah Partey

Do the benefits outweigh the detriments?

Manifest Destiny was the belief of the 19th century that the United States was destined to stretch from coast to coast.

YES

YES

Gold was discovered in 1848.

The U.S. gained more territory, because of the Lousisiana Purchase and the Mexican-American War.

Mining and farming were brought into the American culture.

Offered religious freedom and a chance to explore.

Positive Effects

Gold Rush

Before we can come to a conclusion, let's explore the effects of Manifest Destiny.

The discovery of gold in California drew many people towards the West. Everyone wanted to get rich. Many people were able to find a sufficient amount of gold to make money. That brought wealth into U.S. economy.

Positive Effects

Agriculture

Before we can come to a conclusion, let's explore the effects of Manifest Destiny.

Moving out west, people found minerals that could be mined, such as gold, copper, and silver, which is basically how the state of Nevada was born. Mining and farming brought many jobs to the American people.

Positive Effects

U.S. Grows Bigger

Before we can come to a conclusion, let's explore the effects of Manifest Destiny.

With the Mexican-American War in 1846 and the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, we earned a lot of territory. People needed to move out of the East and spread to the new land. Plus we got a very good deal in the Louisiana Purchase, less than three cents an acre!

Positive Effects

Before we can come to a conclusion, let's explore the effects of Manifest Destiny.

Religious Freedom

Even though in the Bill of Rights we have religious freedom, the Mormons were forced to leave the East and find their own place to practice their religion. Having religious liberties is important, whether you have a belief or do not. Moving out West was good for the Mormons.

The Donner Party

Ruining of the Native American culture

The bison almost went extinct

Negative Effects

Before we can come to a conclusion, let's explore the effects of Manifest Destiny.

The Donner Party

In 1846 the Donner Party, which included 83 people, set out to California from Illinois. Following a guide book, written by Lansford Hastings, they became stranded in the Sierra Mountains during the worst winter ever recorded. To survive many of them were forced to cannibalism.

Negative Effects

Before we can come to a conclusion, let's explore the effects of Manifest Destiny.

Endangered Bison

The American bison roamed the plains of the West long before the Americans stepped foot on North America. The bison was also greatly treasured by the Plains' Indians in their religion. Out of the 13 million bison only about 1,000 were left after Americans used their meat to feed the railroad workers.

Negative Effects

Before we can come to a conclusion, let's explore the effects of Manifest Destiny.

Murder of Native Americans

There was the Sandy Creek Massacre, A Thirty Years War, and Battle of Little Big Horn. What do all these battles and massacres have in common? All of them included the murders of Native Americans and the forcing of them onto reservations to "Christianize" them.

Final Conclusion

After heavily reviewing the evidence of the negative and positive effects of the Manifest Destiny, I would say yes, I do believe the positives out weigh the negatives. Looking at what America is today we really couldn't have gotten here without having people believe it was their destiny. As I wish we could have avoided the massacres, I think going back realizing what we had done we would try to not ruin the Native American culture. It was in the past and instead of dwelling on something that we can't ultimately change, we should look forward to the future of America.
