Major contrusction projects through Chinese history

By Lindsey

Introduction

My topic: Major construction projects and infrastructure through Chinese history

My project

Infrastructure is the foundation of economic growth in China, and the focus of the government for economic development

Thesis

How does your topic demonstrate tradition & transformation in Chinese history?

Transformations

Transformations China has gone through that are reflected through my topic

Advancement technologically and scientifically

  • More resources (financially, etc.) to do projects

Different priorites (due to what is going on in the world at the time, but also due to resources avalible)

Transformations

  • Environment: China focuses a lot on building dams and other renewable energy sources now
  • Instead of having to focus primarily on war/defense (Great Wall of China) they can prioritize luxuries/visual appearance of buildings)

Traditions

Transportation

  • Transportation networks and communications were very important in Tang dynasty
  • Technologies & routes for transportation; trade, spread of ideas

Traditions

Another 'tradition' is how they have (and still do) work hard to establish themselves economically in the world

  • one way they do that is through major construction projects, to symbolize their wealth and draw attention, and for the welfare of their people
  • Tourism and travel

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall

  • Construction first began: 214 BCE and lasted 2,000 years

  • Separate stretchs of walls were built in many different states over time for defense, and then unified in 214 BCE.

  • It was one of the largest building-construction projects ever undertaken.

  • The Great Wall of China was used to block out invaders in pretty much all the dynasties, and was at it's best in the Ming dynasty

Central Question

"The Great Wall served not only for defense but also to centralize control of trade and travel" ("Great Wall of China")

Central Question

  • That reflects the tradition I mentioned before, about tourism and travel, and China wanting to establish themselves economically.

  • It also shows transformation from then to now, how China doesn't need defenses like that anymore because they are more technologically advancement and have more resources to deal with war.

The Forbidden City

Forbidden City

  • Construction: 1420-1906
  • Originally built as palace for Ming emperors

  • imperial palace complex located in Beijing.

  • Architecture is very detailed and representative

  • Largest imperial palace in the world

  • It was very exclusive; the court determined the occupants of the Forbidden City strictly according to their positions in the imperial family.

  • contains hundreds of buildings and some 9,000 rooms.

"A brief history of the Forbidden City

idk

Central Question

"The Forbidden City is a ceremonial, ritual and living space, the architects who designed its layout followed the ideal cosmic order in Confucian ideology that had held Chinese social structure together for centuries" (Peng, Ying-cheng).

Central Question

This relfects tradition because it shows how religion was incorporated into infrasructure and architecture, but not as much anymore (transformation).

Grand Canal

  • A series of artificial waterways built to facilitate trade between northern and southern China

Grand Canal

  • Established an economic foundation for political and cultural unity in China

  • Most elaborate project during the Sui dynasty

  • Required services of conscripted laborers by the millions
  • caused hostility

(Chapter 12: 225).

(Susan Pierres/Peter Arnold)

Central Question

The Grand Canal reflects the tradition of transportation and the importance of trade. And also another tradition, with how China will put progress and development as a country (or the idea of it, seen with the Three Gorges Dam) over the welfare of certain people.

The Three Gorges Dam

  • Built from 1934-2009 on the Yangtze River
  • China's most ambitious undertaking since the Great Wall

Three Gorges Dam

  • over a million people were dicplaced
  • ruins of ancient settlements and historic shrines/sacred places were destroyed
  • animal and plant habitats were destroyed and the entire ecosystem was disrupted

  • Was built with hopes of helping the environment and people, but eneded up harming them too

(Chapter 12: 2-8)

Central Question

  • "Demonstrated the Communist Party's willingness to sacrifice individual rights for the country's general welfare and to take high-stake risks in the name of progress" (Cody, Edward).
  • Tradition

  • "...the Three Gorges Project has become a symbol of China's relentless energy and determination to take its place among the world's great economic powers" (Cody, Edward).
  • Tradition & transformation

(Wines, Michael.)

Shanghai Tower

  • The Shanghai tower is the 2nd tallest building in the world: 2,073 ft. tall. "About Shanghai Tower."

  • "Shanghai Tower is one of the most sustainably advanced tall buildings in the world" ("About Shanghai Tower").

  • It is sustainable and 'green'. ("About Shanghai Tower").

  • It has a special wind-dampner technology that keeps it from swaying in heavy winds. (Shanghai Tower...)

(Shanghai Tower from a distance)

Central Question

The Shanghai tower symbolizes China's economic ability, and is again an example of China 'showing off' and trying to establish themselves in the word (a tradition)

But the transformation that the Shanghai Tower reflects are environmental and technological. China has advanced so much in terms of technology (and science) since the Great Wall of China. Plus, now China has to worry about the environemnt and using clean energy.
