HUNTING HAT

Chapter 25 - Holden gives Phoebe his hat as protection to keep her innocent. He does this because of his appreciation for her youthfulness.

The use of the Hunting Hat as protection allows ones innocence to be contained

Salinger's use of the hunting hat best suits what it symbolizes - The hat itself is a useful and comforting object that Holden uses through the cold NYC winters. Simultaneously the unoriginal context of the type of hat fits Holden's situation and personality.

The hunting hat representation of innocence adds to the entire story as a whole - allows the reader to learn Holden's goal of containing childrens innocence

It was this red hunting hat, with one of those very, very long peaks... The way I wore it, I swung the old peak way around to the back—very corny, I’ll admit, but I liked it that way."

CHAPTER 3 - PG 24

"I couldn’t find my goddam hunting hat anywhere. Finally I found it. It was under the bed. I put it on, and turned the old peak around to the back, the way I liked it, and then I went over and took a look at my stupid face in the mirror. You never saw such gore in your life."

CHAPTER 6 - PG 59

The hunting hat protects Holden's introverted personality from the harsh consequences of society. The "peaks" of the hat sheilds Holdens ear's and head - signifying protection from words, actions, and inte.

"Then what she did - it damn near killed me - she reached in my coat pocket and took out my red hunting hat and put it on my head."
