Ann Lesley Milroy was born in Newcastle, England in 1944. She is a sociolinguist and did her first study that was taken in Belfast in 1977.

Milroy investigated three working-class communities in Belfast: 1- The Ballymacarrell

2- The Hammer

3- The Clonard.

All three areas are poor working-class districts with a high incidence of unemployment.​

She investigated the correlation between the communication of individuals in the community and the way those individuals speak.​
