What is a reflective commentary?

F

A 400 word count explaining the approaches used within your writing in response to a prompt, this includes using descriptive skills to assess the effect of each technique.

E

Structuring your Commentary:

Pro: This allows you to write methodically, covering everything you have done

Con: You may end up commenting on the same techniques twice

Option A:

Work through the text you have written one paragraph or section at at time , following its structure.

Option B: Work through the different elements mentioned in the task

D

Pro: You can cover several references in one comment. You are more likely to be efficient and concise using this approach.

Con: You might spend too much time on one element and not have enough time to cover others.

C

  • Think carefully about what information you consider lifting from the text. Stick to specific phrases to be able to expand off of, later in analysis.

  • Consider how much you should actually quote, will you choose a phrase or sentence?

  • How can you make sure that your quotes are pieced nicely into your text? You need to be able to have both original and new information connected and able to flow.

What to consider while using quotes...

I also tried to convey the movements through reference to the 'nodding heads' of the flowers and the verb 'flutter' which emphasises the way their petals shake.

Strategies for Analyzation:

  • It's important to use a variety of verbs and phrases to reflect.
  • Ex: suggest, convey, present, show, and demonstrate.
  • Consider the grammatical structure being used... if you are describing a subject and lifting adjectives from the text, instead of saying "According to the author..." simply use the word just with quotes.
  • Ex: The pretty flowers bloomed "gracefully."

Piecing your strategies together:

  • The key concepts to uphold when writing your commentary include..
  • Analyzing the techniques of form, structure, and language you used to then expand on the reasoning for its placement.
  • Being specific with your adjectives and examples you are referring to by BRIEFLY quoting them.
  • Finally, explain the effect of your choice of words! How does this tie back to the prompt in the first place and what makes your information unique.

Tips

K

  • It is vital that you refer to the effect of particular language features, devices or patterns when you comment on a text otherwise your comments will reveal little
  • Use modal verbs such as could, should, might, would to help you suggest ideas in a non-definite way. Consider the difference between ‘this means’ and ‘’this might mean’’ the mood or tone.
  • Remember that you are not expected to comment on everything.
  • In your reflective commentary, it can be easier to put everything under subheadings. (EX. Purpose, Title, Setting, Structure, Motifs, and Literary Devices)
