The Rise

The Rise

Aro Confederacy was created by the Aro people for three main reasons: the migration of Aro business families to the Igbo hinterland because of the high demand of slaves in that area, the influence of their god Ibini Ukpabi, and the their military power gained by making alliances with other Igbo militarized states.

The Fall

In 1901, the Aros invaded Obegu, a town belonging to the Ngwa people, who were constantly warring rivals of the Aro people that had sided with the colonists. This act forced the British to retaliate. This led to a major war, the Anglo-Aro war. It began in 1901. After the war, many Aro cities fell to the British as a result of war.

Major Battles

The Legacy

There were only three major battles, which were: the Aro Expedition, from 1901 to 1902, the Aro invasion of Obegu in 1901, and finally, the Aro raids on Anglo allies, which lasted from the 1890s to 1901. Those three battles stand out the most in the Aro people’s history.
