I was born and raised in Winfield, IL, a suburb of Chicago. My parents are Vietnamese immigrants which makes me Vietnamese American.
I am a freshman student majoring in biochemistry at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. My goal at U of I is to explore different career paths in the health field and decide which one I am most passionate about.
During my first few weeks at U of I, I explored the areas surrounding my dorm at ISR such as the Main Quad and the buildings surrounding it as well as the many shops/restauraunts on Green Street. In addition, I discovered many useful resources such as the Asian American Cultural Center, a place that allows me to better connect with my heritage.
Quad Day and the Illini Frenzy helped me discover different resources and RSOs. Sights and Sounds/New Student Convocation helped me feel welcome at UIUC.
During the first week, I tried to step out of my comfort zone by talking to new people. This was difficult for me since I am an introvert. Although these interactions didn't always lead to a connection, it gave me more confidence knowing that everyone is in the same boat trying to make friends.
After a few weeks of class and learning scheduled curriculum, I realized that my favorite classes are Chem102 and Psych100 since I have already learned a majority of the material in these classes in APChem and APPysch during my senior year of highschool so learning it again comes easier. MCB150 is interesting but definitely the most challenging.
My favorite building is definitely my dorm the Illinois Street Residence Hall. I love the interior design of the dorm as it looks like I am living in a mall. Everything I need to live comfortably and study is all in one building.
My favorite places to study are definitely either the Grainger Engineering Library or ISR
I am a member of VSA (Vietnamese Student Association) and AMSA (American Medical Student Association)
My goal for my freshman year is to discover my passion in the medical field whether it be dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, etc. For the future, I want to look into volunteering, internships, and research opportunities starting my sophomore year. Once I feel like I can fully manage my schedule and life at U of I, I will feel comfortable to take on more responsibilities.
