  • Born December 5th, 1901
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Parents: Flora and Ellis Disney
  • The fourth of five children

  • Spent most of his childhood in Missouri until father sold their farm
  • He always knew he wanted to be an artist
  • He studied Art, Design, and Photography at McKinley High School
  • His father did not approve of his dream
  • At 16 he joined the red cross

Beginning

life

  • When Walt returned, he moved back with his family in Kansas City.
  • He then decided to start his career in commercial art
  • He started designing for a local business
  • He named his company: Laugh-O-Grams

  • Walt decided to move to Hollywood, California
  • Roy (Walt's older brother) and Walt decided to start a new bussiness with $750
  • They opened the business in there Uncles Garage
  • The business beginned to flourished and they were able to buy a shop at the back of a real estate office.

  • On July 13th, 1925 Walt married one of his first employees, Lillian Bound
  • They later had two daughters, Sharon and Diane
  • Walt's business was starting to become very popular, but he did not let this come between his family

The true story

  • Many sources may say that Walt's first creation was Mickey Mouse
  • This is actually false
  • Walt's first creation was Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit
  • Oswald was born before Walt formed The Disney Company when he worked at Universal
  • There was a legal dispute and Universal won the rights to Oswald
  • This is why Walt left the east coast and moved to California

  • This turn of unfortunate events did not stop Walt
  • He created a new character to rival Oswald
  • This first creation was used in the silent movie Plane Crazy
  • His first cartoon, Steam Boat Willie, was debuted in sound
  • The creation was the one and only Mickey Mouse

  • Walt owned the patent for Technicolor for two years, making him the only one able to make color cartoons
  • He continued to create new characters and coming up with new ideas
  • Some of the major characters were Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto

The Legacy of Disney

in 1932, Walt's production called Flowers and Trees won walt his first academy award

On december 21, 1937, Snow white and the seven dwarfs, was premeried

Some of the other classics created at this time were Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in wonderland, peter pan, fantasia, dumbo, and Pinocchio

in 1955, Disneyland park opened

Walt and the company, changed its name to walt disney company and then entered television with the program called the wonderful world of color

WALT'S death

  • Walt passed awy from lung cancer on December 15, 1996
  • Roy ran the company and it is still to this day ran by the disney family

After Death

  • Before Walt died he started the construction of Disney world in Florida
  • He did not live to see it open
  • Nonetheless his brother and business partner pursued the goal and it opened October 1, 1971
  • Roy died December 20, 1971 from a seizure
  • He left the company under the control of Donn Tatum, Card Walker, and Walt's son-in-law Ron Miller, who were all trained by Walt and Roy

  • The Disney company is still thriving today
  • The company still makes $35 billion a year
