Blessed Sr Rani Maria: A Lioness of Faith

Childhood

- Born as Mariam Vattalil to Paily Vattalil and Eliswa Vattalil on January 29, 1954 in Pulluvazhy, District of Ernakulam.

- Her name was chosen in honour of Mother Mary following her baptism on February 5th, 1954.

- She was brought up with 6 siblings in the Christian faith.

Religious Journey

- Mariam joined the Franciscan Clarist Congregation at Kidangoor, assuming her religious name “Rani Maria”.

- Aspirancy Period: 3 July 1971 - 30 October 1972.

- Postulancy Period: 1 November 1972 - 29 April 1973

- Novitiate Period: 30 April 1973 - 20 April 1974

- First Profession of Vows: 1 May 1974

- Final Profession of Vows: 22 May 1980

Sr Rani Maria was very vocal in matters of social justice and in social activism.

She received a degree in sociology from the Rewa University.

Transferred to Udayanagar

Death

Sr. Rani Maria was brutally murdered by Samandar Singh in Indore on February 25, 1995.

She was stabbed multiple times with a knife while travelling on a bus.

Until her last breath, she repeated “Jesus”.

Beatification

The beatification process opened on 26 September 2003.

Sr. Rani Maria was beatified on November 4, 2017.
