A quick summary of the context is that the protagonist Noemi is sent to check on her cousin Catalina, who is married to a mysterious family called the Doyles. Over the course of the book, it is revealed that a special type of mushroom that is grown in and around the Doyle Mansion had bonded with the family. This allows the family to store memories in a network called "The Gloom". The Gloom also allows Howard, the patriarch of the family, to use mind-control, cause nightmares and pass his consciousness into other family member's bodies after his death by committing horrible rituals.
It is also revealed that the spores of the fungus have been affecting Noemi and now she too is bound to the house.
