Andy Warhol (Andrew Warhola) was born in Pittsburgh PA, on August 6th, 1928. His parents, Julia and Ondrej Warhola were Carpatho-Rusyns who immigrated from Eastern Slovakia in the early 1920's. The family had grew up speaking the Ruthenian dialect, as his three older brothers refused to speak the English language.
Andy suffers involuntary spasms (‘St Vitus Dance’). For eight weeks, his mother nurses him at home. Due to the illness, he was confined to bed; his mother and brothers would entertain him for hours by showing him how to draw, trace and print images. Andy loved to draw throughout his childhood.
When Andy’s father died in 1942, his main wish was that Andy continue his education to college. In 1945, Andy was accepted at Carnegie Institute of Technology (presently known as Carnegie-Mellon University) to study painting and design. He would be the first of his family to ever go beyond high school.
One of Warhol's first freelance jobs is at Glamour magazine. He becomes a successful commercial artist, working for most of the major fashion magazines throughout the 50´s, doing album covers for Columbia Records, designing Christmas cards, book jackets and retail ad campaigns, including the now famous shoe ads for I Miller.
Warhol starts painting with oil on canvas. His first works include a Coca-Cola bottle, an icebox (refrigerator), a can of Del Monte peach halves, a Campbell's soup can and an advertisement for a water heater.
Andy Warhol was admitted to hospital suffering from pain caused by gallstones. After he was released from the hospital, he does his last art peice as he paints people in relationships. Showing love through art, he produces a series of paintings by having people urinate on canvases.
