The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850 by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
The novel is set in Massachusets during 1642 to 1649 and tells the story of a woman who commits adultery (she has a child with other man that is not her husband) and due to this, she is forced to bring with her a letter A for everyone to know that she cheated on her husband.
Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American short story writer who was born in 1804 and died in 1864 (59 years old).
He was born in Massachusets (the same place where the story sets on) and then he moved to Salem where he became an important member of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
He has many different popular novels and short stories but The Scarlet Letter is one of the most popular he has.
As there are many characters that take part in this story, we should focus just on the 4 more important ones, which are the woman, her husband, her daughter and her "lover".
Heser is the main character of this story. She is a very strong person as she has to go on with her live without a husband and having a little daughter who has to take care of.
Even with all these issues and it such a difficult situation she go ahead without fear of anything.
Hester's husband is an old man who fakes his real identity and pretend to be a doctor while he try to find the person who is the real father of his wife's daughter.
When he dies let all his money to his "daughter" Pearl.
Arthur is a very popular reverend loved by everyone in the village because he is a nice person. But the thing that anybody knows, is that he is the secret lover of Hester, who refuses to tell his real idetity to prevent him to be punished.
When he realizes his lover's husband know his real identity, he start to feel bad and due to this, he start punishing himself. His health get worse and he finally dies.
Pearl is Hester's daughter, when she grows she gets a very similar attitude to her mother, being a girl full of charcter and with a very independient personality.
She gets this whimsical personality because she grows in prison and she is completely alone (no friends, no family...)
She is also very intelligent and she always get what she wants.
As I'm not a huge fan of reading, every time I have to read a book it becomes a challenge. In this case, it wasn't that hard as it is a very short story with an striking and addictive argument.
Perhaps it seems the typical infidelity story (well, it is in a way) it has something different, and the fact that I read it in english made it more interesting as I've never read such a long text in english before.
