Layers of the Atmosphere

Troposphere

  • Layer closest to the earth (starting at Earth's surface)
  • The tempeture decreases as you move up this layer.
  • Weather happens here

Trophosphere

Weather

Convection currents happen in this layer (warm air rises and cool air falls) causing most of our weather to occur here. These currents are caused by the radiating heat from the sun.

Stratosphere

  • Second layer from the bottom (the layer above the Troposphere and below the Mesosphere)
  • The tempeture increases as you move up this layer
  • Airplanes fly here
  • One of the layers that helps protect us

Stratosphere

The Ozone Layer

The Stratosphere contains the ozone layer which blocks out UV rays. This helps protect the earth and the people on it because UV radiation is harmful to the earth.

The Ozone Layer

Mesosphere

  • The third layer from the bottom (above the Stratosphere and below the Thermosphere)
  • The tempeture decreases as you move up this layer
  • One of the layers that helps protect us

Mesosphere

Meteor Sheild

Meteors burn up when they reach this layer. This helps protect both us and the earth from the harm that the impact of a meteor could cause on the earth's surface including loss of human life and destruction/altering of property and ecosystems.

Thermosphere

Thermosphere

  • The uppermost layer of the atmosphere
  • The tempeture increases as you move up this layer
  • Divided into the Ionosphere and the Exosphere
  • Hottest layer
  • Sattelites and radio waves travel here
  • Home to the International Space Station

Ionosphere

  • The lower section of the Thermosphere
  • The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) can be seen in this layer. This is the phenomenon of solar wind ionized particles meeting the earth's magnetic feild to produce a colorful glow in the night sky.
  • Contains particles with an electric charge because they absorb UV and X rays from the sun
  • Radio waves move here with ease

Exosphere

  • Upper portion of the the Thermosphere
  • Air is very thin here
  • Sattlites move here because of the the low air friction

Which layer is most important to me?

What layer is most important to me?

The most important layer to me is the Stratosphere because the ozone layer it contains block out UV radiation. UV radiation reaching earth (due to ozone damage) has been heavily linked to global warming which causes a negative domino effect on the earth and its ecosystems. Global warming contribute to many enviromental issues including serious ones such as rising ocean levels and the melting of the glaciers. Without the Stratosphere, the enviroment as we know it would be gone.
