The poor laws were created in 1601.

What were the Poor Laws

The poor laws were created to provide relief to those in poverty. Before the poor laws were created the wealthy acted harsh and cold, but thanks to the poor laws they became more kind and compassionate to those in poverty. Impotent Poor. Those who cannot work. For these, relief would come in the form of an almshouse or poorhouse depending on the circumstances.

Able-bodied Poor. The Parish would provide the means for them to work in a place provided by the Parish: a Workhouse.

Idle Poor. Vagrants and Beggars. Subject to punishments including Prison.

Poor children. Were to become apprentices.
