Anton Flettner
Flettner Rotors are smooth cylindrical rotors that which is spun along the long axis which has the smallest moment of inertia.
The Flettner system serves 2 main purposes on board a ship:
1. For propulsion
2. For stabilization
The rotor comprises a spinning cylinder with circular end plates and, in an aircraft, spins about a horizontal axis. When the aircraft moves forward, the Magnus effect creates lift.
Flettner Sail
1) Ships fitted with Flettner rotors can sail even when the wind is not in the direction of sailing.
2) The rotor sail is said to be 10 times more efficient than a conventional sail, creating more lift with a smaller surface area.
