The setting in the One and Only Ivan is in a shopping mall called the Big Top Mall. The Big Top mall is located on exit 8 next to the freeway. It takes place in a circus in the Big Top Mall next to the food courts .The animals live in domains.

The main characters in this story are Ivan, Stella, Ruby, Bob, Mack, Julia, George. Ivan is a Silver back gorilla that loves to draw and paint.Stella is a elephant with a foot infection that perform in the circus shows. Ruby is a baby elephant that is being trained to perform in the circus. Bob is a lazy dog that sleeps on Ivan's stomach. Mack is the owner of the circus. Julia is the daughter of George and brings supplies for Ivan to draw with. George is the father of Julia and a janitor.

Conflict

The main conflict of this story is Stella is worried about Ruby. Stella makes Ivan promise to her that he will not let Ruby live a bad life. Stella wants Ruby to have a good life and not live in a circus. Ivan wants to help Ruby but dosnt know how.

The rising action in this story is Ruby the new baby elephant comes to the circus. Stella wants Ruby to have a good life. Stella has foot infection that keeps getting worse. Mack will not take her to the vet because it is to expensive. Stealla's foot keeps getting worse and she passes away.

The falling action of this story was when Ivan made signs that read H-O-M-E.George hangs the signs on the billboard. He gets fired for it. people begin to argue with Mack to let the animals to go to a zoo.

The resolution of this story is when Ivans plan works. Ivan and Ruby get moved to a zoo. They are now with animals of their own kind. George got a job at the zoo that Ivan and Ruby got moved to.Julia and her dad took Bob home with them.
