MY identity

My history

Family history, culture, language and ethnicity.

Family Background

Family Background

For my family, I come from southern and eastern European roots. On my mom's side, she was born and raised in Italy then moved to Chicago when she was 5-years-old while my dad was born in Chicago to Polish-immigrant parents. Both of my parents' parents decided to move to Chicago due to having family in the area and wanting to pursue a better life in America.

My cultural Background

My culture

Since Poland and Italy are Roman Catholic countries, me and my sister were also brought up in the church. I was primarily raised by my mom's side more when it came to culture and tradition rather than my dad's side, so I usually say that I'm Italian not Polish. I actually know Italian since I grew up learning it in school and speaking it so I can talk to my nonna. These aspects are important to me because I still want to hold onto my roots and honor the people who came beforfe me by continuing their traditions.

Customs and Traditions

Customs

Due to being a first-gen Italian, there are important things that I usually celebrate with my family such as St. Joseph's day (patron saint of Italy), Lent, and mostly catholic-based holidays. These are events that I was raised in and mostly celebrate culturally, not religiously.

I was also pretty much raised to value family and hold onto tradition althugh personally, I'm not really like that except I only hold mostly my immidate family close to me.

My Neighborhood

My Neighborhood

I grew up in a suburb called Norridge that is pretty close to the border of Chicago. I usually saw that I was raised in Chicago since where I live, you can easily cross the street, then you're in Chicago. It is a pretty densely packed place as more developments popped up over the years. I don't see as many trees as I used to when I grew up but we have nice retail and public buildings such as the library and newer houses. I've been here for 27 years.

Some of the things I love about my neighborhood is how close everything is together.

NeighborHood Demographics

Demographics

Over the years, Norridge has become more diverse. When the community was first founded, it was a predominantly white with most people being immigrant or first-gen Americans. As I grew up, we began to see more Hispanic, Middle eastern, and Asian families move in along with more black families.

We also have a great public school system so I began seeing more younger families move in while older generations moved out.

My politics

Political beliefs and ideals

Politics

Poltical Beliefs, local and State Politics

I honestly don't pay attention to Norridge politics but I usually consider Chicago politics as my 'local' due to the fact that Chicago is such a large city and currently struggles with issues such as equity, racism, and corruption. For state, I have a more positive view since I do appreciate the massive progress we've made under JB Pritzberg but we still have a long way to go as a state when it comes to dealing with debt and education inequality.

I have to say that my mom is is the reason why I got into politics because she also is super into it and influenced a lot of my personal political beliefs. We're both very liberal and socially conscious.

Local & State

Federal Government

Federal

As a teacher, I do teach government for a living and I believe that for the United States to florish, more focus should be put into providing social supports, such as ending homelessness and income inequality, instead of inflating the military budget.

As a white person, I think that the government does do enough except for poor rural white people that have limited

access to resources such as education and healthcare.

As for our current president, I don't really have much of an opinion as most presidents have to typically deal with the fall out of the previous adminstration. Only time will tell despite his term coming to an end soon. Personally, there should be age limits on running for office. I'm tired of seeing elderly men and women make decisions that can directly impact younger generations.
