Literary Devices

The Poem- imagery, figurative language, and sound devices are used to express the speaker's experiences. The crystal stairs are a metaphor compared to the speaker's life. Repetition: There is a repetition of the line “life for me ain’t been no crystal stair” has created a musical quality in the poem

In the song, there was a simile, repetition and a metaphor found. The metaphor says "me and my mama had beef". He means they disagreed a lot and had fights. He doesn’t mean they had beef as in meat. The usage of repetition. He kept repeating dear mama and you are appreciated. The simile said "we were together like Bonnie and Clyde".

Why were they both written? What was the purpose?

Purpose

Results

The Song - used to put other likewise mothers into the equation by making general statements within the narrative such as “it ain’t easy to raise a man”. That is his way of acknowledging that it is a particular challenge for a single mother to bring up a male child without the support of his father.

The Poem - Mothers who are having a heart-to-heart conversation with their son. His purpose is to show that the strongest people in life persevere through difficulties. In this poem, a mother uses several metaphors to convey the ways she has seen adversity.

What is similar or different about them? (Compare/contrast)

6

Compare/ Contrast

The difference is that one is to his mother and the other is from a mother and I think that it connects the to because it gives to a different perspective

One is more about the mother and her troubles and the song more talks about the understanding of how it must be hard to raise him and the “life story” of some families

Compare/Contrast

Do you like one better than the other? Why?

7

The Song

Yes

I like the song better. I think it is a stronger connection to the world and families all over, and I feel that it went into more depth, had more of an emotional appeal.
