Congress is divided into two houses. The first, the Senate is the more deliberative house, consisting of 100 U.S. Senators, two from each state. Senators serve 6-year terms. The jobs of Senators are to ratify treaties and confirm presidential nominees. Currently, the Democratic Party holds majority in the Senate.
Congress mainly gets their power from the U.S. Constitution. The powers exlicitly stated in the Constituiton are known as enumerated powers. Furthermore, the necessary and proper clause grants more powers to Congress that aren't explicitly stated in the Constitution. Finally, Congress also gains power from Supreme Court decisions, the media, and citizens. The Enumerated Powers of Congress grant Congress specific powers in national security, economic, juducual, regulatory, and administrative fields.
The second house of Congress is known as the House of Representatives. Each state has a certain number of representaties based on population. Currently, there are 435 members, with nine being reps for Indiana. The Speaker of the House is the leader in this house. As of now, the Democratic Party is in control of the House as well. Reps are elected every two years, and their job is to originate all revenue bills.
