UVU Interpreting Internship with USDB
My name is Matthew Nelson, I am a senior at Utah Valley University. I am just finishing up my undergraduate work in Deaf Studies with Emphasis in Interpreting. I took ASL classes in high school, then I was fortunate enough to serve an ASL mission and since then wanted to pursue a career in interpreting.
Finding one can be annoying at times because locations may or may not be offering one depending on the school year. The point is to be consistent and start looking for one early.
1. Set up an appointment with Jamie and discuss internship interpreting sites based off of your interests.
2. Email internship sites that appeal to you, please be sure to include samples, certifications, and other related work to the job to ensure you look professional and are interesting in interning with them.
3. Being consistent is the key!!!
My internship site was with USDB in Ogden. It was very interesting to see the RID CPC tenets applied in action. It was one thing to read about it and then another to see its practicality. I was able to learn expounding upon existing context and to not make assumptions that the students just know what the teacher is talking about.
In a history class one of my mentors was interpreting the lesson and it was about colonialization of the New World. It wasn't till later in the lesson she decided to ask the students if they even new what the New World was. The students had now idea and the interpreter needed to trace back and discuss not only what the New World Was but explain also colonizing.
I defiantly learn in educational settings you are the not just the interpreter, you are the language model for that student. They will copy your habits of sign language so it is vital to develop good ones for the students to implement. I also learned about various subjects to the classrooms in which I interned that would include history, art, and geography.
Getting the most from your internship
A second pair of eyes always help. Throughout my internship there were habits I had that I had no idea about till my mentors told me. A willingness to learn helps because it shows interests in your line of work
It is said we cannot interpret what we don't understand. Having an interest in the subjects we interpret in allows us to come up with better ways to render a more accurate message instead of just doing word after word in hoping the Deaf student will just understand.
It can be easy to gloss over certain criteria. However, observance can go a long way in helping you fill out reports and essentially help you learn how to be a better interpreter.
