Human Impact On Nitrogen Cycle

How Humans Interfere

Humans combust fossil fuels and use fertilizer. Combusting fossil fuels releases nitrogen into the atmosphere, creating nitrogen- containing compounds. This leads to acid rain and air pollution.

Negative Outcomes

When the artificial fertilizer containing nitrogen a used the excess fertilizer may runoff into lakes, streams, and other bodies of water. A major cause of eutrophication is excess fertilizers from agriculture.

Negative Outcomes

Reversing Human Actions

Humans manage nitrogen by restoring wetlands and governing how people use nitrogen and creating policies for it. Laws protect air and water pollution from excess nitrogen.

Reversing Human Actions

Addintional Info

Nitrogen makes up about 78% of earth's atmosphere by volume, which is commonly referred to as air. Scientists made a process in which you could transform nitrogen and hydrogen into ammonia. This created fertilizer.
