My life as a Cyclone

By Lucas Fisher

What am I?

What am I

I am a cyclone. A cyclone is an intense spinning storm system that forms over warm ocean. I can occur in tropics when warm air rises up from the waters' surface, creating a spinning air tube. As the air continues spinning, my eye is formed. The eye of a cyclone is a calm, clear area, where there is no turbulence.

Cyclone Categories

What are the categories of cyclones?

The categories of cyclones are as follows;

Category 1: Gales, with wind getting up to speeds of 90-125km/h

Category 2: Destructive, with winds from 125km/h up to 154km/h

Category 3: Very destructive, with winds anywhere from 165km/h all the way up to 224km/h

Category 4: Very destructive, with winds from 225-279km/k

Category 5: Very destructive, with winds with speeds of more than 290km/h

What do I look like

Where was I?

Where was I

I am a category 3 cyclone that caused massive destruction in East Pakistan, or modern day Bangladesh. This country is below China, Nepal, and Bhutan, and is surrounded on either side by India. The Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean are both underneath Bangladesh.

Where was the Bhola Cyclone?

When did I occur?

I occured in 1970, and was ongoing for 10 days, from the 3rd of November to the 13th of November.

When did I occur?

Who did I affect?

Who did I effect

I am estimated to have killed more than 500, 000 people, making it the deadliest cyclone in the world. However, the real death toll will never be known, as many people died during mudslides, and were never found. The majority of those killed were young children (29.2%), and the elderly (20.7%). Around 85% of homes in the area were destroyed.

Why do I lose power?

Once I move over cold water or over land and lose touch with the hot water that powers them, these storms weaken and break apart. Recent studies have shown a link between ocean surface temperatures and tropical storm intensity – warmer waters fuel more energetic storms.

How do I lose power

Who helped those affected by me?

I am a massive natural disaster, causing the second largest death toll in the world caused by a natural disaster. The United Nations sent out an alert, asking countries to assist by sending packs of clothes, bedding, medicine and water-purifying tablets to help those who survived the cyclone. The RAF then went on to airlift the supplies to East Pakistan (Bangladesh). Even though many other countries gave supplies to those in need, the Pakistani government did little to help their people.

Who helped the people affected by me

How was East Pakistan (Bangladesh), affected by me?

How was the area affected after I arrived

The 1970 Bhola Cyclone caused MASSIVE damage to the the area, with 400, 000 houses, 3, 500 schools, and more than 1 million acres of rice paddies destroyed in the storm. 280, 000 cattle died, and 65% of the fish were killed, which caused big problems, as 80% of the protein consumed in the area came from fish. 38,000 marine, and 77,000 inland fishermen lost their lives, and 9,000 boats were destroyed.

We (Bangladeshi) have been very resilient despite the problems we've faced. We have always risen and have never been defeated.

We will fight until we get to where we want to be.

How am I measured?

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based only on a hurricane's maximum sustained wind speed. This scale does not take into account other potentially deadly hazards such as storm surge, rainfall flooding, and tornadoes. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale estimates potential property damage.

What precautions should humans take?

  • Stay in high ground

Some ways to get your home ready for a cyclone:

1. Clear your yard. Make sure there's nothing that could blow around during the storm and damage your home. ...

2. Cover up windows and doors. ...

3. Be ready to turn off your power. ...

4. Fill clean water containers with drinking water. ...

5. Check your carbon monoxide (CO) detector's battery to prevent CO poisoning.
