Naming Rules for Compounds

Chemical compound to coumpoud name

How many elements are there?

How many elements are there?

2

Where are the elements on the periodic table?

This is an ionic bond

-Name the first element listed and then name the second but change the ending to "-ide"

Opposite ends

This is a covalent bond

How many of the first element is there?

In the same area

Name the first element exactly how its written in the periodic table

How many of the second element are there?

1

Give the prefix "mono" to represent "1" and change the ending to "-ide"

1

Give it a prefix according to how many elements there are, change the ending to "-ide"

More than 1

"di" prefix

2

"tri" prefix

3

"tetra" prefix

4

"penta" prefix

5

"hexa" prefix

6

Give it a prefix according to how many elements there are; Do the same thing for the second element (1-"mono")

More than 1

"di" prefix

2

"tri"

3

"tetra"

4

"penta"

5

"hexa"

6

The transition element needs to have a roman numeral next to it indicating it's charge

1 in middle and 1 on the side

Figure out the charge of the other element

-Look at the column it belongs to on the periodic table and multiply it's charge by the # of elements there are

-Eg. -2 charge and 3 elements

(-2)(3)=-6

-How many of the transition elements are there?

-Divide by the # of transition elements you have

-In the end the charge of your transition element and second element should cancel out and be neutral

Two of these elements are polyatomic ions

Look at the list of polyatomic ions

3

Ammonium _____________

-Name the last element with an ending "-ide"

Cation (NH4)

Name the first element as usual

If transition element then follow transition element rules

-second word should be the name of the polyatomic ion

Anion (everything else)
