Celie Leaves Home

Celie Leaves Home

Celie is basically sold off by her father to marry Mr. _____, against her will. She’s sold off because Mr._____ initially wanted to marry Nettie, and went to ask Celie and Nettie’s father for Nettie’s hand in marriage. However, their father said no and offered Celie instead. Because of this, she is also forced away from her sister, the only person who truly loves/cares about her. She also is forced out of school, which she loves.

When Imagining This Scene...

When I Imagine This Scene...

When imagining these scene, I imagined how sad Celie would look when she realizes and as she is going through the process of leaving her sister, the only one who's ever really cared for her, and as she's forced away from school—something she really loves.

Celie Sees Her Daughter

Celie Sees Her Daughter

Celie while in a store sees her daughter, Olivia. Which is hard for her because she so deeply loves her children, and she very unfortunately cannot be wit. h her and is forced to watch another mother care for her.

When Imagining This Scene...

When Imagining This Scene...

When visualizing this scene I imagine Celie's face and how overjoyed she must be to see her daughter, but then imagine how her face falls when she realizes she can't be with her daughter and how frustrated she must feel not being able to explain to the woman that the baby is her daughter.

Nettie runs away from home to be with Celie

Nettie Runs Away From Home To Be With Celie

Nettie runs away from home and lives with Celie and Mr. _____. Celie had someone in the house that cared for her and tried to teach her since she no longer attended school. However, Mr. _____ clearly still was interested in Nettie, but after realizing Nettie was not interested in him at all, he kicked her out. Nettie says that only death can keep her from writing to her sister, but months go by and Celie never receives any letters.

When Imagining This Scene...

When Imagining This Scene...

When I visualize this scene I imagine how Nettie and Celie would play together and how Nettie would teach Celie many different words, kind of like they did in the movie adaption. I also see how sad they would both be when Nettie leaves, and Celie wouldn't be as happy anymore.

Celie Is Told To "Fight"

Kate, one of Mr. ____’s sisters, tells her she has to fight, just as Nettie told her to fight. But Celie doesn’t seem the point in fighting if she’s still alive.

When Imagining This Scene...

When imagining this scene I see how frusterated and upset Kate would look while telling Celie that she has to fight for herself, and how Celie would nod but not really mean it. Since Celie believes that fighting will get her no where, based on what has happened to those around her who decided to fight for themselves. She thinks back to Nettie and how she believes that Nettie is dead. She believes Nettie died because she decided to fight. So, Celie believes in just doing what she can to stay alive rather than fighting.

Sofia Confronts Celie

Sofia confronts Celie after Celie had told Harpo to beat Sofia to make Sofia listen to Harpo. Sofia gives a speech to Celie about how all her life she's had to fight men, and doesn’t appreicate Celie for invoking fights between her and her husband. This confrontation turns into a conversation and Sofia and Celie learn to understand one another, and become closer as friends. It shows how vastly different they are. Sofia who will stand up from herself no matter what and Celie who won't stand up for herself and is afraid to.

When Imagining This Scene...

When I visualize this scene I see how the confrontation would start off with Sophia extremely upset and wanting to just completely go off on Celie, however Celie easily diffuses the situation by not treating the confrontation as a confrontation, but instead as a conversation. Celie sees the error of her ways, and apologizes. As the scene goes on I can imagine Sophia calming down immensely, and starts sharing knowledge with Celie. I also imagine how much closer Celie and Sopha become.

Shug Avery Comes To Town

Shug Avery Comes To Town

Shug Avery comes to town and stays with Mr.___ and Celie. Shug Avery is very sick and Celie takes care of her. Through Celie nursing Shug Avery back to health, the two get closer. Shug Avery gets better and becomes well enough to sing at a "jukejoint" Harpo made out of his and Sofia's old house, called Harpos. Celie finally gets to see Shug Avery sing, something she's always wanted to do. One night Shug Avery sings a song dedicated to Celie that she created when Celie was helping Shug Avery get better.

When Imagining This Scene...

When imagining Shug Avery coming to town, I visualize how much more happier and safe Celie would feel. I imagine her surprise when Shug Avery is intially very rude to her, and how she smiles when the two become closer and closer. I also imagine the little moments between them, and how each of them would enjoy their interactions.

Sofia Is Arrested

Sofia is beaten and arrested after refusing to be a maid for the mayor's wife. Upon standing up for herself and not being forced to do anything she doesn't want to, she's beaten and arrested.

When Imagining This Scene...

When visualizing this scene I imagine how hopeless and upset Sophia felt while she arrested for simply telling a white woman no. And because of her skin color, she's beaten and arrested, and subjected to treatment that she never deserved in the first place. I also imagine how herself and her children must've been very scared during that moment, and I imagine the frantic and frightened looks on their faces.

Squeak Tries To Save Sofia

Squeak Tries to Save Sofia

Squeak, Harpo's new girlfriend, tries to help out Sofia in prison by tricking her uncle, the warden, into getting Sofia out of prison and into serving as a maid instead. However in the process she is beaten and raped by her uncle.

When Imagining This Scene...

When visualizing this scene I would imagine how worn out and sad Squeak would look after she returned home. Also how betrayed she would look and feel because of the actions of the warden. I imagine how apologetic Harpo would look, and how hopeless he would feel to have not been able to help or defend Squeak at all. There would be a very sorrowful atmosphere in this scene.
