Heart of Darkness Timeline

Ivanna Argueta AP B

1

The novel begins with the act of storytelling aboard a ship on the river Thames around the turn of the twentieth century. An unnamed narrator, along with four other men, is aboard the anchored Nellie waiting for the tide to turn.

1st event

2

Marlow recounts that he was hired by a belgian trading Company through the influence of his aunt. They wanted to send him to Congo since the Congo was then belgian territory.

2nd event

3

3rd event

Marlow goes to finalize his contract and meets to peculiar women that are knitting in the middle of a room. A secretary takes him to a meeting to sign his contract and then a doctor comes and gives him a checkover, remarking that he never gets to see the men he checks come back. He measures Marlow's head and explains how the changes usually occur on the inside.

4

4th event

After finalizing the contract, Marlow goes to say goodbye to his aunt who tells him to try and make some good in Congo and educated the "savages". Marlow makes a remark on how the company doesn't care about people but rather profit, and is bothered by his aunt's ignorance and makes a mysogynistic comment about it.

5

On the steamboat on the way to Congo, Marlow meets a Swede who recognized him as a seaman and tells Marlow about another Swede who hanged himself after being in "the interior".

5th event

6

6th event

Marlow comes to a grove of trees and discovers a bunch of dying natives, and described the place as an inferno. He tries to give one of them a biscuit, but the man died before him (I assume).

7

7th event

Marlow is told by the chief accountant that once he goes into the interior he'll probably meet Mr. Kurtz, who is an agent who sends in a ton of ivory. This is the first time we hear of Mr. Kurtz

8

8th event

Marlow's steamboat he was supposed to opperate is sunk. He meets with the general manager who is quite odd and provokes uneasiness. The Manager tells Marlow that he had to take the boat to relieve the inner stations, especially Kurtz's because it is rumored he is ill. He also praises Kurtz.

9

9th event

Marlow overhears the manager and some other guy talking about Kurtz, and about how Kurtz wants to turn the stations into places of moral improvement and wants to take over the manager's position. They also talk about him being ill and that that might take him out. They also conspire against who they refer to as "the wandering trader".

10

10th event

Once the steamboat is repaired, Marlow, the manager, some natives and some pilgrims embark on the journey to Kurtz's station. During the journey, they hear a loud cry in the fog. As they continue, the journey, the boat is attacked by natives. The helsman is injured and the pilgrims open fire. Finally, Marlow scares away the attacking natives by blowing the boat whistle.

11

11th event

A russian trader Marlow had heard the manager complain about before receives them as they arrive to the inner station. The russian tells Marlow that the natives attacked them because they don't want Kurtz to leave. The russian talks about Kurtz as if he were a god.

12

12th event

The russian explains to Marlow how Kurtz is a sort of god for the natives, and how he gets ivory by having the natives work alongside him. Afterwards, when Kurtz is carried into the boat, he yells at the manager that they're there for his ivory and not to help him. The manager condemns Kurtz for his actions, and Marlow, indignified by his hipocrysy, tells him he thinks Kurtz is a remarkable man, alienating him from the company.

13

13th event

During the night Kurtz escapes and Marlow decides to leave the ship and go find him. Once he find Kurtz they have a sort of stand off in which Kurtz threatens to have the natives attack Marlow. Marlow talks him out of it, reassuring him that he is greatly talked about in Europe and that if he continues like this he will be lost. They go back to the ship.

14

14th event

Throughout the journey on the steamboat, Marlow listens to Kurtz's ramblings, realizing they're mostly nonsensical and greedy. Fearing he might die, Kurtz gives Marlow a bundle of papers so that the manager wouldn't have them. He finally dies as his final words are "The horror! The horror!"

15

15th event

In the end, Marlow returns to Brussels and is greatly emotionally damaged. Some people show up that knew Kurtz and Marlow gives away some of the documents. Afterwards, Marlow visits Kurtz's fiance who still greatly mourns Kurtz. Marlow lies a little bit about Kurtz to comfort her.
