Himawari House is about the main character Nao who moved to Japan and the story unravels the lives of her and the two women she meets, Tina and Hyejung and their two housemate brothers, Masaki and Sinichi. From chilldhood to their love lives they all come together for eachother.
Nao was born in Japan but moved to America and was raised there for most of her life. She comes back to Japan for school to relearn her roots as a native born. She encounters difference, self-worth, and love.

Each character has a theme of their own that makes the story as a whole. The charcater's theme involves their cultural backgrounds and upbringing. I think the theme of the story is self-identity. The charcaters are either running away from something or trying to find themselves in a new environment.
The title of the book I chose is Himawari House. This title is significant because that is where all the characters are gathered and they learn more about eachother. In this house it is filled with shared emotions, love, and support. The charcaters experience new things that they couldn't before and it gives them comfort and trust.
The conflict we mostly see in this story is the love lives of our characters. Nao experiences a new love with Masaki, Tina is falling fo the stand offish Shinichi, and Hyejung past lover was someone she couldn't rely on and was used for only one thing. This adds to them trying to find themselves.
Hyejung love life is resolved by her starting fresh in Japan and focusing on her college life. Tina decides to rush confess to Sinichi but they decided it was best to stay as friends and housemates. Nao unfortunately only planned to stay for her gap year so her time with Masaki is short but they plan on to still romantically think of one another.
You feel the romance and longliness for a relationship in this novel. Some is anguish, one-sided and new.
Refreshed in this story is notorious. The Himawari House is a place they went to so they can start anew, find themselves, and relax. The story is refreshing because we can see the changes they experience.
Throughout the story the characters have flash backs and gives a feel of reminisce. Something that is missed and something that should be forgotten
