You may write on the paper I provided or your own paper. This journal will go in your Purple Hibiscus notebook.
The second question may be difficult for you to answer. If you are unsure, you can wait until I explain it.
In 5 minutes, we will share and discuss.

The more you know before you read, the better you understand.
The genre is narrative, meaning it is told in first person, and coming-of-age (bildungsroman), meaning it is about the protagonist's experience growing up.
While the novel is not a mystery, it does have a few twists and turns, so I highly recommend that you do not google the plot. The wikipedia page will spoil you.
If you have ever felt like you do not belong, if you have ever struggled with your family, if you have ever felt like the world is falling down around you, if you have ever wondered who you really are, if you have ever been 15, then you will relate to this novel.
The novel is set in three cities in Nigeria:
Enugu
Abba Town
Nsukka
The time is contemporary - meaning 1990s-now
with her family
This is the village where Papa comes from.
He grew up there and now owns a mansion there.
He returns on holidays and hosts a feast.
Do Now: Work on the anticipation guide silently for 10 minutes. Then, we will discuss.

"Flawless" Analysis
Work on your research project
If you finish early, begin reading.
Beyonce's "Flawless" samples Adiche's TED Talk, "We Should All Be Feminists."
1. Silently read the lyrics. You may make
notes in the blank space, but leave room for
notes from me.
2. Consider how Beyonce's and Adichie's
parts are similar and different.
3. Analyze why Beyonce chose to sample
Adichie's speak.
In pairs, you will research a topic related to Purple Hibiscus in order to create a short presentation.
I will go over the assignment, and then you will sign up for a topic in Google Classroom.
All presentations are due at the end of next class!
Finish your research with your partner and create your presentation.
Pay careful attention to the requirements for each slide.
