Lord of the Flies: Theme

Dale Reas-Do / English 11 Online

Fear in the Beginning

Fear in the Beginning

Generally, all the problems that took place on the island was only because of fear.

To the right are a couple of early signs of fear, soon to be even more terrifying as the story progresses.

War

Piggy mentions that there has been a war that is currently happening.

"Didn't you hear what the pilot said? About the atom bomb? They're all dead." (pg. 16)

War

First Timers

After the realization of being survivors of a plane crash, the boys now need to mend themselves to survive for the first time of their lives.

First Timers

In the Middle

The boys fears become more radical the longer they stay on the island.

The Beast

The Beast

Jack brings up something he calls "The Beast". All the other boys believe that this "beast" has been seen by Jack. This makes everyone become terrified and aware that there may be this monster wandering around the island.

The reality about this is explained by Simon. "Maybe there is a beast... Maybe it's only us."(pg. 125 and 126). Simon brings up to the group that the beast is actually within each and every boy on the island. As the boys become more savage, the Beast becomes even more terrifying.

Jack

Jack

As Jack and fear lead the boys towards insanity, everyone becomes bloodthirsty savages. They begin talking less intelligently and slowly realize that there is a small chance of surviving and that they will proabably never get rescued. The boys slowly begin to lose their civility.

In the End

Death

As said earlier, Jack uses fear to brainwash and use power over the boys. The fear eventually worsened to the point where it lead the boys into not just savagery, but murder. Piggy and Simon were eventually murdered by the boys where Ralph was also targeted, fortunately was able to escape death. Unfortunately, all these horrible actions were made because of the illusion of fear.

The Novel and Fear

Conclusion

Jack was successfully able to brainwash the boys with a radical type of fear as it was only being seen as an illusion. Like Adolf Hitler, he used fear in order to control others. Most importantly, the reader must understand that fear was the MAIN reason why all the problems occured. Without the projection of fear in the novel, the storyline would be focused on more relaxed, teamwork-like characters rather than characters who express inner savageness.
