Our abolitionist is named Frederick Douglass. He had two wives, his first wife was Anna Murray-Douglass, and the second wife was Helen Pitts Douglass.

His mother's name was Harriet Bailey, and there was no corroborating information on a father. He had five siblings named Eliza, Perry, Kitty, Sarah, and Arianna.

Frederick Douglass lived during slavery and the civil war. Frederick was born into slavery. His mother was a slave, so he was a slave but he always wanted to be educated and a free man so that is what he did. Frederick Douglass was even alive during the Civil War. So in Frederick Douglass’ life, he saw the peak of slavery and the ending of it.

Frederick Douglass was born the son of a slave. Douglass rarely saw his mother before her death around 1825. Douglass lived with slaves until he lived in Baltimore, Maryland with Hugh Auld. Douglass has said this experience led him to the path of becoming an abolitionist. In Baltimore, Douglass learned how to read and write until he was sent back in to slavery. Douglass had to endure brutal conditions, which included not being fed and being beaten everyday.

In 1838, Douglass escaped from slavery and became a free man. In 1845, Douglass published Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, and he goes to England to escape slave hunters. In 1846, his freedom is purchased and he returns to America. In 1855, Douglass publishes My Bondage and My freedom. From 1861-1864, Douglass aids Lincoln in the Civil War and insists that they treat african-american soldiers better. In 1884, Frederick Douglass married Harry Ellen Pitts.
