Newly freed slaves were looking for equality and a place among society. During the time of Reconstruction Republicans took steps to help ensure their place in politics

The 15th Amendment prohibit discrimination against voters on the basis of race or previous condition of servitude

Poll Tax and Literacy Tests

Poll Tax

Although the 15th Amendment had been passed states used a variety of ways to keep African American's from voting.

The poll tax was a special tax that was required to be paid in order for someone to be able to vote

Literacy Tests

Literacy tests were used to help exclude African Americans from the voting polls. However, whites found that literacy tests also would exclude large numbers of whites from becoming eligible voters since many whites could not read or write either
