The white oak river basin is located in North Carolina. This river basin is located in Onslow county, Jones, Craven, and Carteret counties. White Oak stretches from the low part of the Cape Fear river to the Pamlico river. White Oak drains into the Atlantic Ocean and passes through Croatan National Forest. The river basin is about 1382 square miles and is about 320 total miles of streams and rivers but about 40 miles long. This river basin is home to more than 300,000 people and many different animals. The river basin includes saltwater marshes and hardwood swamps. 25% of the basin is forested and 32% wetland. The white oak river basin was served as a highway of travel 200 years before becoming a river basin.
There are 4 main river systems in the White Oak river basin. These include the New River, White Oak River, Newport River, and North River. Some plants that live in this basin are Venus Flytrap, pitcher plants, bladderworts, butter worts, sundews, and an array of lillies and other wildflowers. Some animals that live in this basin are turtles, west indian manatees, american alligator, short nosed sturgeon, fish, snakes, and frogs.
The White Oak river basin is used as a form of transportation. The river basin is a non point source pollution basin. The White Oak river basin has many golf courses around it and septic systems and forestry. The basin has prohibited fishing, boating, and swimming. There are many parks and walking trails within the river basin. Those include Cape Lookout, Hoffman Forest, Oakhurst Nature Park, and Hubert Bypass Park. The river basin is mainly swamp and forest. Fertilizers and pesticides are limited on the landscape.
At the White Oak River Basin there isnt proper management in some places which results in bad water quality. Sedimentation is the biggest non point source pollution issue. In 1999, Huricane Floyd hit, flooding hog waste lagoons. This released 25 million gallons of manure into the river. This caused a lot of animals to die. A lot of pollution here is nitrogen and phosphorus. Some species that are endangered or threatened here are the eatern diamondback rattlesnake, Red Cockaded Woodpecker, and eastern coral snake. The White Oak River Basinwide Water Quality Management Plan controls the water quality in the White Oak river basin. I think we can increase the participation in taking care of this river basin. I think we can also add more signs to prohibit littering and polluting around the river basin and add more trashcans in the parks.
