Morning:
A tanner would usually begin their day in the early morning, firstly they would go to the butcher and buy animal hide from them. Butchers would also sell the horns from the animal along with the hide.

After arriving back from the butcher they would remove the horns and would sell them off to a horn worker or would leave them in a nearby pit.
Before the tanning is done the animal skin is de haired, flesh and fat removed and desalted. The procedure has extreme odor because animal hides were initially plunged using urine. The skin is then soaked in water for 6 hours-2 days.

Tanning:
The actual tanning is done by soaking the leather in a bath of aqueous solution, congaing potash alum and salt.
Age and Gender
The status of a tanner is not high so someone could easily become a tanner once they enter a certain age (14).There was no known female tanners during the medieval times, if you were to become a tanner you had to be a male.
In order to become a tanner your education was not important and you did not need much of an education, most medieval tanners were taught by family members. Many people saw them as people who did unskilled work, dirty and poor. Although they were looked down on people wouldn't have shoes or leather.
In order to be a successful tanner there are lots of physical skills and adaptations. They would have to be able to endure the long hours of hard work and they also need to be careful because they have to work in a dangerous environment and it can be easy for them to get injured. If you were to get cut or hurt in the medieval times it would be hard to be cured because there were not many medicines at the time.
There are also mental skills for being a tanner such as patience since you need to wait a long time for the hide to soak properly. A big thing about being a tanner is that the work conditions are extremely harsh such as the reeking smell. Being a tanner means you have to get your work done no matter what and there are strict deadlines on when you need to finish your work by.
A tanner needs lots of equipment and tools to make leather. Some of these are buckets for the soaking, Edge tool (a tool with a sharp cutting edge such as a knife or chisel), hammers, gouges, skivers.

Tanners were catagorsied with craftsmen because their work is mainly done by hand.
Feudal Pyramid
In the past there were tanners and tanneries everywhere, in every town and city. But tanneries and tanners are very rare due to the lack of tanning being taught. I assume a lot of people choose don’t tanner as an occupation because of the pay, the average yearly salary of a tanner in the U.S is $27,000. The tanning industry is currently being declined because the price of leather is increasing bit by bit.
Positives:
- You can easily have access to leather.
- It’s not hard to become a tanner, you can become one easily with little requirements.
Negatives:
- Tanning produces wastewater which is damaging to the environment.
- You have to live away from everyone since the smell is so strong.
- Long hours of hard work
- Barely any profit.
- Status is low
I would not choose to take on this role because as you can see on the previous slide is that there are a lot more negatives then positives. I would not be able to deal with the horrid stench and hard work for me to earn barely any money. I would rather do a job that pays more and has a higher status.
