Themes

Mero

Mero is our progtaonist, a seemingly normal high school girl save for her being a siren with the power to control men through song. Mero has to seduce a victim and take her first heart before her 17th birthday or she won't mature into her powers (losing them).

More pressure is put on her shoulders when she finds out her other siren sisters are dying- their species is going extinct. Mero has to mature into her powers so that eventually she can procreate so that her sisters and their powers don't disappear forever.

Characters

Raidne

Raidne is Mero's mother and unfortunately, her antagonist. Raidne is a very powerful siren who has taken many, many hearts. So much so that it often draws suspicion, causing their family to move around a lot.

Raidne is hard on Mero becasue of the stakes of her siren sisters dying and losing their powers. A siren dies when a victim they are singing to rejects their song. Raidne ultimately fears losing her power to control men due to her past. She fears being weak. Being human. And she will do anything to make sure Mero (who has been raised around humans) understands this.

The Siren Sisters

Siren Sisters

Gia and Molly, Mero's older siren sisters, also try to help Mero as she goes on the journey of learning how to seduce and eventually fall in love (to her detriment).

Even if sirens are related (they can only give birth to one child hence the population issues) they don't necessarily look alike. Sirens are the vision of their birth father's ideal of beauty- therefore they can look completely different to both the parents. But each siren has their own specific siren song.

The Mythology behind it

Siren Lore

I had a lot of fun pulling from Greek myths and infamous scenes from classic literature.

A big misconception about siren lore is that they are not actually mermaids. They were originally half human woman half bird. Women with wings similar to sea birds as they are often perched on coastal rocks waiting for shipwrecked men to lure.

I also had fun figuring out how they would take a heart and what that means on a thematic level. When a siren performs a "siren kiss", she can take a piece of a male's heart and therefore control him. Though If she kisses him for too long, she can kill him.

In my version, the way to see how many hearts a siren has taken is through tattoos. When a siren takes a heart, she gets a red tattoo on her back which form a set of wings.

Siren Songs

Because singing their siren song is such a big part of the story and who the sirens are, I had a lot of fun composing each siren's theme that best represents their character.
