The memorial at Camp Lazear stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made in advancing medical knowledge.
A moment of silence to honor Dr. Lazear's invaluable contributions to science and public health.
Let us carry forward the legacy of Camp Lazear and remain vigilant in the fight against infectious diseases.
The findings from Camp Lazear's study paved the way for significant breakthroughs in understanding and combatting yellow fever.
Camp Lazear conducted controlled experiments to investigate the transmission of yellow fever. He believed that unsanitary conditions could also foster the disease. He sais direct contact with infected clothing or bedding could result in the fever. They also found that yellow fever is more common with warm summer weather. Test subjects were paid only $100 to contract this fever and some cases were fadel.
If the test subjects ended up contracting the disease they would be paid an addition $100 as compinsation 2/5 volunteers ended being infected and got $200 in return instead of the $100. They tested clothing of past infected people with bloody discharge traced all over, they tested it with the volunteers by setting them in the room with the non-infected patients. The stench of the clothing was discribed as unbarable.
Camp Lazear's research continues to inspire and guide the study of infectious diseases and mosquito-borne illnesses.
The lessons from Camp Lazear persist in the ongoing efforts to address global epidemics and public health crises.
In 1900, after his daughter Jesse Lazear died of yellow fever, Army major Walter Reed and his team identified mosquitoes as the carriers of yellow fever to the AMPHA (American Public Health Association) in indianapolis. He dubbed a testing area and named it Camp Lazear.
Camp Lazear's meticulous research continues to shape modern medical knowledge and disease prevention efforts. They still have not found a cure for the disease but are working and also finding more ways to prevent it. Bug spray, is always a good preventitve but is not garanteed as some mosquitos can still bite.
Tragically, Dr. Lazear himself succumbed to yellow fever during his research. But with his research it help find that when a mosqito bites an infected person and bites another and transmits the disease. And we found that the mosqitos that transmits the disease have had it for at least 12 days.
