and loved by
Siegfried
- Dragon Slayer
King of Burgundy who
wins the hand of
Brunhild with assistance from Siegfried
Chief vassal of
the Kings of Burgundy
Queen of Iceland
King of Huns.Mostly
known as Attila
In Burgundy lives a maiden princess named Kriemhild who is known for her beauty and charm.
Seigfried hears about Kiemhild and go to the Burgundy to win her for his bride.
Gunther’s vassal, Hagen, recognizes him as the mighty slayer of the Nibelung princes and possessor of their massive treasure. Siegfried is also virtually invulnerable, having bathed in
a dragon’s blood.
Gunther is attacked by his old enemies and Seigfried successfully drives them away.
Seigfried agrees to help Gunther
win Brunhild for his wife.
Every suitor of Brunhild
has to undergo physical
strength in the form of combat.
If vanquished, the suitor would
suffer a cruel death.
Brunhild, despises Gunther and
his men because they seem inferior in wealth as compare to her other suitors.
Seigfried, to raise Gunther's status, tells the queen that he is a vassal to Gunther.
The trial begins and Gunther wins only because Siegfried, putting his cloak of invisibility , performs all the actions for him.
Gunther wins Brunhild for his wife
and a double wedding happens.
However, Brunhild is unhappy and resentful.
In her indignation, he ties
Gunther up and hangs him
on a nail.
Siegfried pities the plight of Gunther and tells him that the secrets of Brunhild's strength is in her girdle and her ring.
With Gunther's consent, Seigfried succeeds in getting the girdle and the ring, gives them to Kriemhild
and confides the story to her.
A few years past, Burgundians
decided to hold a great feast.
Siegfried and Kriemhild are invited.
Brunhild boasts that Siegfried is
a mere vassal of Gunther's,
Kriemhild tells her the truth, and carried off by pride and passion, produces the girdle and the ring that Siegfried took from Brunhild.
Brunhild vows vengeance, and with Hagen she plans to kill Seigfried.
Guther pretends that enemies
are about to attack Burgundy
and Siegfried volunteers to
defend it.
Hagen convinces Kriemhild to
reveal to him Siegfried's
vulnerable spot on his shoulder
as he promises to protect this
spot from the enemy.
The enemy attack does not, of course materialize, and the royal party goes hunting.
After the hunt, Siegfried goes to a stream to drink some water.
Hagen, thrusts a spear into the vulnerable spot of Siegfried.
Siegfried was killed.
The second part is a complicated and bewildering series of events relating the atrocious and horrifying revenge of Kriemhild.
She marries Etzel and invites all her kinsmen, including Hagen to a great feast.
But before she
can reveal her
triumph she is
slain by
Hildebrand.
Dietrich had wanted to set them free but Kriemhild put them to death .
Hildebrand from Dietrich had Gunther and Hagen bound as prisoners.
