Character Analysis
Billie Jo
Billie Jo is a girl who lived in the 1920's-1930's during the dust bowl. Her favourie thing to do is play the piano. Even though she was taught to play it by her Ma, she doesn't nessisarily aprove of her playing it.
When her Ma got pregnant with Billie Jo, both of her parents wanted a boy to help with hard work. When she was born and was a girl, her parents were dissapointed but that didn't stop them from getting her to do work that normally boys would do in that time.
Ma
"Ma" is, you guessed it, Billie Jo's mother. In the first few pages, we we find out that her and Billie Jo's dad were hoping to have a boy, but they got Billie Jo. They had tried to have another child, but it didn't work for a while. But, we find out on the next page, that mom is expecting another child.
Ma seems very sweet and caring from how Billie Jo talks about them. She makes sure that Billie Jo and her father have food to eat, she cleans the house after dust storms, and she cares about Billie Jo's education.
Daddy is Billie Jo's father. He really wanted Billie Jo to be a boy so that she could do boy's work. But he got a girl, but named her a name that was usually given to a boy. He tried to get her to do boy work until Billie Jo turned nine. But she could handle mostly everything that her dad told her to do like on the tractor. After Ma had died, Billie Jo and her father's relationship wasn't as good as it was when Ma was alive. They didn't talk much at all, and their relationship was rather awkward.
Arley W. is Billie Jo's, Mad Dog's, and other people's music teacher. He comes off as a fun person because Billie Jo loves being a part of Arley's crowd so much. He encourages her to play piano and even payed her in the beginning of the book for her to play in dimes.
Mad Dog
Mad Dog is a friend of Billie Jo and possibly someoene that Billie Jo might like. and he is apart of Arley Wanderdale's crowd. Billie Jo has stated before that he is really good at singing. Billie Jo has given hints that she might be jealous of Mad Dog because Arley always chooses him to perform at events before Billie Jo so he is the first to come to mind which makes Billie Jo somewhat envious. But, at the same time, she is grateful for Mad Dog because in Autumn 1934 in "Dance Revue", she stated that Mad Dog doesn't look at her like she is a "poor motherless thing", but someone he knows. So he seems like a nice person.

Mr.Hardly
Mr.Hardly seems like quite a rude person. In "Mr.Hardly's Money Handling," he gave Billie Jo glares as she walked in his store, he charges too much for his stale food, he argued with the folks that were repairing his roof, and when he gave Billie Jo too much money back, when she gave the money back to him, and he didn't even say "thank you" to Billie Jo. So for these reasons he doesn't seem like such a courteous person.
Mr.Noble
Mr.Noble is one of the two people who made a bet of who could kill the most rabbits. This makes Billie Jo mildly annoyed/angry because she feels bad for the rabbits. She says in "Rabbit Battles" on page 6, "They ought to just shut up. Betting on how many rabbits they can kill. Honestly! Grown men clubbing bunnies to death. Makes me sick to my stomach." So obviously, Billie Jo is not very fond of Mr.Noble.
Mr.Romney
Mr.Romney is the person who made the bet along with Mr.Noble for who can kill the most rabbits. Billie Jo doesn't really like these men because they are killing rabbits she feels bad for, even though she knows they eat what they aren't supposed to, especially around this time and "they could hop halfway to Liberal and still not find food."
Miss Freeland seems like a kind person.
