What is Wrong With Cinderella?

Zoe, Cristian, Benedict, and Emylie

Trunk: Claim/Argument

Gender roles and the expectations that girls must live up to are influenced by how girls are brought up trying to fit into the mold of a Princess.Society has accepted and pushed this way of thinking, thus tarnishing both boys´ and girls´ principles.

Roots: Context

Gender Issues with young girls we see today began with the release of Snow White (First Princess). Growing up, it has been normalized for young girls to aspire to relate to popular female figures like princesses. It’s not that princesses are a negative influence, but rather the way they are marketed. Because of this, girls have begun to wonder what’s wrong with them when they don’t look like the characters they idolize.

Branch: other claims/sub claim

Branch

Cultural destruction would occur (backfire effect) if everyone stood up against princess culture because society has always turned a blind eye towards gender issues.

Branch: other claims/sub claims

Branch

Fruit of the tree: Conclusion/solution

Fruit

Princesses should be seen as a character in a movie rather than a role model for children since it can be harmful to their self-image. Raising your children to be aware of gender issues is key.

Leaf: supporting evidence

VIP Quote

“A reward for her is ‘you look so pretty, you look so beautiful.’ People tell her that all the time, and we do too. We tell him, ‘You’re so smart.’”

VIP Quote

"The boys had chosen spiders, superheros, athletes, tigers. The girls fell into exactly four camps: princess, fairy, butterfly, and ballerina...The boys seemed to be exploring the world while the girls were exploring femininity"

Bird: Appeal/Counter Argument

Bird

Boys experience more pressure when it comes to fitting into gender roles because of their more strict stereotype to be strong and manly. If a boy has a more feminine look or chooses girl toys over boy toys, they’re judged.
