Rye's husband and 2 children
Man who killed obsidian
woman who was stabbed
women's 2 children
Rye was suicidal because her family had died from the illness and she was the only one left. her only hope was going to her brother’s house in Pasadena. A fight broke out stopping the bus she was on. A man with a badge from the LAPD showed up and broke up the fight. She ended up getting in the car with the man and he took her to her brothers in Pasadena. She didn't know how to read or write so giving direction were difficult.Rye was jealous of him because he could read. But he couldn't understand what he was saying while she could speak. The illness took away what every person valued most. They formed a connection with each other. Then while stopping to help a woman on the side of the road obsidian was shot and killed. The two children of the woman came up to her. She took them with her because she saw hope in them just as she did in obsidian. She could help teach them.
Don't lose hope even when everything around you has fallen apart
Rye lost hope in the world when her entire family died from the illness. Rye lost hope in everyone and yet in the end of the story she found hope in both obsidian, and the children. So now that her hope has been restored hopefully she’ll go on to help raise the new generation and restore hope in others.
Page 8: “Women either settled for less or stayed alone. If they found an Obsidian, they did what they could to keep him.”
This quote helped me realize how messed up they're society had become. They didn't have any nice people anymore. And if you found someone you wouldn't let them go. They can't take anything or anyone for granted.
Page 6: “She handed him her own name symbol—a pin in the shape of a large golden stalk of wheat. She had bought it long before the illness and the silence began. Now she wore it, thinking it was as close as she was likely to come to Rye”
I chose this quote because I thought it just encompassed the whole idea of people losing they're every day functions. She had this pin from before the illness and used it to represent herself. She had no other options.
Page 11: “What if children of three or fewer years were safe and able to learn language? What if all they needed were teachers? Teachers and protectors.”
This quote showed the hope Rye gains by the end of the story. She stops looking at everything as a problem she can't fix and something that has nothing to do with her. She starts seeing that she could make a difference just like obsidian
Why couldn’t they talk around others?
Could some people talk and others not able to?
Why was Obsidian going around helping people?
