Post-modern dance

History of Ballet

Ballet first started in the courts during the 15th century and was funded by Catherine De Medici. However, King Louis XIV is considered the actual founded of ballet.

Merce Cunningham

(1919-2009)

Balthasar de Beaujoyeulx, who was a court musician and choreographer in the 16th century created Ballet comique de la reine which lead to many more court ballets in France in the mid-17th century.

Alwin Nikolais was a choreographer who's work was viewed as dehumanizing whichwas different from modern dance. He still has influences artists today who aren't creative as himself at the time.

Judson Church(1962-1964) were experimental, and practices unorthodox dances compared to modern dance. They also thought that pedestrian movement like walking, running, and jumping was dance. This is why they belived that you didn't need to be a trained dancer in order to dance.

One of the founders of Judson Church and started Trisha Brown dance company. Always was experimenting with dance and created over 100 dances.

Centered his work around chance dance and believed that movement is expressive. He also started working with John Cage in 1944 and later on became his romantic partner.

History of contemporary dance

Contemporary dance began in the 20th century. It is a style that allows the dancer to display emotion through breaths and movement, it also indluces a lot of movement on the floor.

Betroffenheit is translated to shock or concern in English. It starts with a man who's daughter, nephew, and niece died on a vacation in a fire.

In the 1920s-1940s, Lester Horton began to create a dance using Native American dances, and other movement techniques. He also established the Lester Horton Dance Theater which was geared toward modern dance in LA.

Ballet

Isadora Duncan was an American ballet dancer early in the 20th century who strayed away from the norms of classical dance and ballet. She helped start what would become contemproary dance.

History of modern dance

Modern dance could have started as a rebellion to ballet becuase it was free dance/movement and the clothing was completley different too.

Marta Graham Moved to California from Pitsburgh in her teens and in LA she knew her "fate was sealed" as a dancer. She attended Denishawn school of dance, after when she moved to New York, she started to coreograph and performs her own pieces.

History of Hip-Hop

Harlem in 20s and 30s had nighclubs like the Cotton Club during the prohibion era. Many great African American musicians and artist performed here.

Duke Ellington was the lead of the house band that performed at the Cotton Club from 1927-1930)

This piece was directed by Ivan Vsevolozhsky a week before Christmas in 1892 and now it has become apart of Christmas tradition.

A Russian art critic and patron who was a huge ballet supporter. Founded Ballet Russes and helped many famous dancers and coreagraphers grow during his time there.

Graham starred as the Chosen One in this piece and she became very well known. Marta "came to the moment of finality."

Formed his own company in 1946 and hired Doris Humphrey as artistic director. Recognized as one of the greatest male dancers of his generation.

Boogz would release a piece on July 4th 2019 that would show some of the history of racism in the U.S.

-Jon Boogz is an artist, choreographer, and director who focuses on movement in order to help dance evolve into it's next form. He also tries to shed light on current social issues that need attention and reform.
