Models of Suffering

By: Maya Jones

Who?

My mom - Carolyn

Who?

Why did I choose this person

Why did I choose this person

I chose my mom for this project becasue she has gone through the suffering of cancer. She has been through tough challeneges all throughout her life, but the one aspect of suffering that I vividly remeber with her is the time she had cancer.

Her Story

Her Story

"Thirteen years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 2B Breast Cancer. I would describe it as a difficult, scary and physically challenging time. I went through major surgery, 12 weeks of chemotherapy and 12 weeks of radiation."

How Did She Handle Her Suffering

How does she handle her suffering

"I never really thought of it as suffering. I approached it as something I had to go through to get better and to live. It was a time of inner reflection in which I grew closer to family and to God."

How Did Her Friends and Family Help?

"I felt blessed by the many friends and family who rallied around me and gave me strength to face each new challenge. I had a Caring Bridge site where I heard from so many people from my childhood and earlier work experiences that I hadn’t seen or heard from in many years. It was up lifting. As I come across others who are going through life’s challenges I try and remember how important that outreach and messages of hope were in my life by being there for others."

What Does She Do About Her Suffering in a Positive Way?

"I don’t really like the word suffering because it implies a negative mind set. I think the more you think of yourself as a victim, the more likely you are to become a victim. Life isn’t always easy. But you learn and grow from adversity. I am a stronger person than I was 13 years ago. I am more aware of God’s grace, and the importance of friends and family."

What Saint Does She Remind Me Of?

When I think of my mom, I can think of Saint Peregrine Laziosi. He is an Italian saint of the Servite Order. He is the patron saint for persons suffering from cancer, AIDS, or other illness.

Symbol

Why I chose this symbol

I chose this symbol because this was a family picture that my parents wanted to take just in case my mom didn't surivive. If she didn't surivive we would always see her face as we walked down the halway to our bedrooms. Luckly she faught through tha cancer and is alive today. Now we just have a nice family photograph in our hallway.

How is grace working in this person’s life?

She recives grace in her everyday life from God. God gave her life, He gives her breath everyday life, and He made her a survivor. After going through something tramatic you learn that life is short so you have to live everyday to the fullest, and I think my mom knows that. My mom is a follower of God and she uses each day to live out His word.
